The Sheriff’s Office stores evidence seized by deputies during criminal investigations. Items classified for safekeeping are also stored, such as:
- found or abandoned property
- weapons seized pursuant to a domestic violence protective order
Without a court order, evidence in Sheriff’s Office custody will not be released or destroyed. Even if a defendant is not convicted, the court must order evidence disposition. There are a few exceptions, such as recovered stolen property stored for a crime victim.
Property from inmates in the Detention Center is not stored in the evidence room. That property is the responsibility of the Detention Center.
