Deputy

A Cabarrus County Deputy Sheriff Must:

  • Be at least 20 years old.
  • Be a citizen of the US.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent. Training and standards requires equivalent diploma be at least partial classroom.
  • Possess or be able to possess a NC driver’s license.
  • Not have a conviction of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
  • Meet applicable standards and Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office requirements. Must qualify for State Law Enforcement Certification. This certification is in accordance with the NC Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission.
  • Must live and be able to respond within one hour of the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office.
  • Be of good moral character.

Nature Of Work

Deputy Sheriff's are responsible for general law enforcement required by the Sheriff's Office. This law enforcement work includes:

  • keeping the peace
  • serving the public
  • protecting the lives, rights and property of everyone in Cabarrus County

A Deputy Sheriff’s duties include:

  • taking calls from the public
  • serving the public
  • investigating complaints and criminal activity
  • traffic enforcement
  • serving civil and criminal process as well as other papers required by the courts
  • developing suspects
  • arresting perpetrators
  • providing security for the courts
  • transporting prisoners
  • other special assignments upon request

A Deputy Sheriff is expected to:

  • exercise good, sound judgment
  • make decisions in both normal and emergency situations
  • use discretion while carrying out the details of each task

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the assigned lieutenant and sergeant. Applicants must be willing to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Physical ability to cope with demands of law enforcement training and work.
  • Establish a working knowledge of law enforcement practices and procedures.
  • Establish a working knowledge of federal, state and local laws.
  • Establish effective relationships with co-workers, officials and general public.
  • Ability to learn new procedures.
  • Ability to qualify with all mandated weapons. Qualification is in accordance with Sheriff's office policies and procedures and state laws.
  • Ability to follow directions, learn policies and procedures and act independently. Sound judgment is expected in all situations.
  • Ability to obtain full law enforcement certification.

Examples Of Work

  • Patrols assigned areas of Cabarrus County and checks property. Answers calls for service, investigates crimes and disturbances and arrests law violators.
  • Enforces federal, state and local laws and prevents crime.
  • Provides security for Cabarrus County courts.
  • Transports prisoners, mental patients and inebriates.
  • Serves the civil and criminal process as directed by the courts.
  • Assists local, state and federal agencies in their law enforcement functions.
  • Investigates crimes through assignment or develops cases to investigate.
  • Provides public and educational presentations.
  • Works as a school resource officer.
  • Performs special assignments or tasks, including under-cover and clerical.
  • Prepares reports as required by office policy.
  • Performs other duties as required by the Sheriff.

Detention

A Cabarrus County Detention Officer Must:

  • Be at least 20 years old.
  • Be a citizen of the US.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent. Training and standards requires equivalent diploma be at least partial classroom.
  • Be in good physical condition.
  • Possess or be able to possess a NC driver’s license.
  • Not have a conviction of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
  • Meet applicable standards and Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office requirements. Must qualify for State Law Enforcement Certification. This certification is in accordance with the NC Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission.
  • Must live and be able to respond within one hour of the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office.
  • Be of good moral character.

Nature Of  Work

Detention Officers are responsible for transportation and security of Detention Facility prisoners. They also perform desk duty along with care and direct supervision of inmates. Work is performed in accordance with:

  • Detention Facility policies and procedures
  • NC Department of Human Resources guidelines
  • Training and Standards Council of the NC Department of Justice

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the squad or area supervisor. Applicants must be willing to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws governing operation of the Detention Facility.
  • Knowledge of forms, records and reports used in the Detention Facility.
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to maintain discipline and order among inmates.
  • Ability to work in a confined area.
  • Ability to deal firmly and courteously with inmates and visitors.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in both routine and emergency situations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.

Examples Of Work

  • Patrol the Detention Facility. Maintain inmate head-count. Gate or door security within and outside the Detention Facility.
  • Book, search and collect property from inmates. Advise all inmates of policies that govern conduct while in the Detention Facility. Supervise inmate cleanliness of self, quarters, surrounding areas and laundry.
  • Assist in serving meals to inmates.
  • Answer phones and file inmate folders. Keep records of inmate's visitation, showers, medications and other procedures.
  • Transport and escort inmates to various locations.
  • Perform other duties and work as required.

Telecom

A Cabarrus County Telecommunicator Must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a citizen of the US.
  • Have high school diploma or equivalent. Training and standards requires equivalent diploma be at least partial classroom.
  • Possess or be able to possess a NC driver’s license.
  • Not have a conviction of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
  • Meet applicable standards and Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office requirements. Must qualify for State Law Enforcement Certification. This certification is in accordance with the NC Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission.
  • Must live and be able to respond within one hour of the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office.

Nature Of Work

A Telecommunicator is responsible for day-to-day operations at the Communications Center. Telecommunicator responsibilities include

  • receiving and transmitting radio, telephone and teletype messages
  • dispatching law enforcement personnel, fire and emergency units
  • record keeping tasks

Employees are expected to work with considerable independence. Applicant must be willing to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends. Work is supervised by a Telecommunicator II.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the Cabarrus County street/highway system and geography.
  • Knowledge of radio, telephone and communication equipment operation.
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely in a well-modulated voice.
  • Ability to think/act quickly, calmly and accurately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to understand/follow complex oral/written instruction and procedure.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to type 21 words per minute with no errors.
  • Acquire certification from the State Bureau of Investigations Division of Criminal Information. Certification must occur within 120 days of employment. Recertification is required every two years.

Examples Of Work

  • Receives calls and broadcasts on multiple radio frequencies. Receives requests for law enforcement, fire or emergency services by phone, radio or teletype. Records phone and radio traffic for playback as needed. Determines nature of required assistance, location and other pertinent information.
  • Monitors burglar and fire alarms and emergency telephone systems. Maintains records of all radio and telephone transmissions.
  • Transmits orders and received messages from a large number of law enforcement units. Maintains status of all working units. Relays general information to the public. Refers non-emergency calls to the proper office.
  • Dispatches emergency units as required. Notifies ranking officers of calls as needed. Maintains radio contact with other law enforcement agencies. Operates a computer terminal to send/receive law enforcement information.
  • Maintains current knowledge of patrol boundaries, main thoroughfares and access routes.

Education And Experience

Must meet all applicable standards for State Telecommunicator Certification. Certification is in accordance with the:

  • NC Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission
  • Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office Policies

Intern

The Sheriff's Office offers internships to college students on an ongoing basis.

Interns help the Sheriff's Office carry out many vital and support functions. They also aid in developing closer ties amongst Cabarrus County communities.

Interns are usually assigned to a specific division or unit based on their interests. Jobs include:

  • Records Personnel Assistance
  • Civil Officer Assistance
  • Jail Inmate Booking
  • Communication

Interns are asked to work a set number of hours per week based on class requirements. Hours are flexible, enabling students to work around their class schedule.
