The deputies in these specialized units are assigned primarily to a full-time position. These full-time positions can include divisions such as patrol, detention, criminal investigations, etc. Deputies rotate with their division's schedule and are on call for specialized units. They are called out or scheduled as needed for special events or incidents.
To be assigned to a specialized unit, a deputy must go through an extensive selection process. Once selected, the officer undergoes vigorous training with the NC Justice Academy. This specialized training prepares the officer for high-risk situations.
