Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) Permit

Want to apply for a concealed handgun permit? Read the information below and follow the steps. If your permit expired, you must apply for a new permit.

For Change of Address, you must have a valid Cabarrus County Concealed Carry Permit. If your permit is from another County, contact that County's Sheriff's Office first.

Requirements for New Applicants

To qualify, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be a citizen or naturalized citizen
  • Resident Aliens: bring a resident alien card, social security card and NC driver’s license or NC ID card
  • Be twenty-one (21) years of age
  • Attain at least one month's residency (30 days) in Cabarrus County
  • Not suffer from a mental or physical infirmity preventing safe handgun handling/operation
  • Successfully complete a firearms training and safety course. The course must been designed by the NC Criminal Justice Standards Commission. See NC DOJ website for approved instructors in NC.
  • At time of appointment, provide a valid NC ID or NC driver's license provided by the State of NC

Requirements for Law Enforcement or Other Employees

Information for current NC Law Enforcement Officers/local, state or company police employees. In accordance with NCGS § 14-415.12(A). Bring the following items for NC Firearms Safety Training Course exemption:

Law Enforcement Officer

  1. Completed Firearms Exemption Form
  2. Current employee identification
  3. NC issued identification

NC Private Protection Services

  1. Completed Firearms Exemption Form
  2. Current employee identification
  3. NC issued identification
  4. Firearms registration permit issued by the Board

Retired Law Enforcement Officers

Information for retired NC Law Enforcement Officers. Applying for the first time within two (2) years of retirement, in accordance with NCGS § 14-415.19(A1). Must also submit:

  1. Copy of officer's letter of retirement from either:
    • NC Teachers and State Employees Retirement System
    • NC Local Governmental Employees Retirement System
  2. Written documentation from agency head where person was previously employed. Documentation must indicate person was not:
    • involuntarily terminated
    • under administrative or criminal investigation within six months of retirement

Fees

  • New Concealed Handgun Permit: $90 ($10 fingerprinting fee included)
  • Renewal Concealed Handgun Permit: $75
  • Duplicate Concealed Weapon Permit: $15

There is also a $4 convenience fee for applying and paying for your permit online. The convenience fee is not collected by the Sheriff and is paid to the online payment system company. You will not be charged if you apply in person.

Fees associated with the application process are non-refundable.

Step 5.Background Check

A criminal background check is performed on each applicant before granting the permit. The Sheriff has forty-five (45) days to either issue or deny a permit. The time starts after all application materials are received. This includes the mental health records.

 

Step 6.Receive Permit

Once issued, you will receive your permit in the mail within 10 business days.
