Save a life, adopt a shelter pet! When you adopt a shelter pet, you are actually saving two lives, the life of the pet:
- you welcome into your home
- taking the space made available by your decision to adopt
Available pets find themselves in our care for various reasons:
- found running the streets
- abandoned
- otherwise unwanted
We also accept pets from Cabarrus County residents facing a heartbreaking decision. The decision to relinquish their family friend.
Adoption Process
If you are interested in meeting any of the animals, fill out an application to start the process. Visitors may walk through our adoptable pets, but you must be 18 or older to enter animal care areas. An adoption application must be submitted and approved prior to meet and greets. We prefer appointments for meet and greets. Our adoption counselor will have time to help you find your perfect match, if you make an appointment. We welcome walk-ins, but they may be subject to longer wait times.

All animals receive age appropriate vaccines and routine vetting while in our care. An animal may be adopted before a booster can be given for certain vaccines. Additional vetting is the responsibility of the adopter with their family veterinarian. According to state law, our shelter does not provide public veterinary services. We are not allowed to provide follow up care once a pet has been adopted. Adopters receive the pet's medical history with due dates for next vaccines/treatments.
Puppies and Kittens
Want to adopt a puppy or kitten? Be prepared for additional veterinary needs shortly after adoption. Puppies/kittens need routine vaccines and deworming every few weeks until 16 weeks. Be prepared for this additional financial responsibility when adopting puppies and kittens. At our shelter, we cannot administer a Rabies vaccine until a pet is 16 weeks or older. Adopting a pet under 16 weeks (4 months)? Your veterinarian will have to administer their Rabies vaccine at the appropriate age. We do not heartworm test dogs or combo test cats less than 6 months. This standard is a national best practices due to high likelihood of false test results. Your veterinarian will also have to provided these tests at the appropriate age.
