The Communications division is responsible for the dispatch
and direction of the Sheriff 's Department patrol division,
community police, civil division and animal control. The center
also dispatches all Emergency Medical Service calls as well
as the counties fourteen Volunteer Fire and Rescue Agencies.
The center also handles incoming 911 calls throughout the
county. There are three primary answering points (PSAP) in
this county. The three agencies are the Concord Communications
Center, Kannapolis Police Dept, and Cabarrus County Sheriff's
Department Communication Division. Each PSAP receives calls
within it's own jurisdiction, and also acts as a backup for
the other PSAP's.
There are a number of programs the
center provides to better serve the community, such as the
"Home Check Program". The center also monitors an
alarm system which enables residences and businesses to have
an alarm that comes directly into the Sheriff 's department
and avoids the delay of a secondary alarm company. The Communications
center is equipped with five CAD(computer aided dispatch)stations.
The CAD system is being replaced with a new Windows NT based
system from Vision Software. The telephone system is a CML
system. We chose this phone system because not only are we
a 911 PSAP, but we also answer a large number of administrative
telephone calls. We currently have six emergency (911) lines
and six non-emergency lines. The previous UHF radio system
has been replaced with an 800 MHz trunked radio system designed
by Motorola Inc.. This radio system is a joint venture between
the two cities (Kannapolis and Concord) and Cabarrus County
to provide a communications system that can function across
the jurisdictional boundaries to all members of public-safety.
